Sharing is caring!

This is a simple and easy moon sand recipe. It took me less than 10 minutes to make.

My toddler was even involved in making this moon sand recipe which made the experience a lot more fun for the two of us.

What is moon sand made of?

Moon sand is basically like a dough that children can play with.

It is not as firm as a play dough, but children can feel it crumbling in their hands.

As the name suggest, it feels like the texture of a sand. Children can make shapes and sandcastles with it.

Moon sand is perfect for younger children. It is a great sensory activity and actually can release stress for older children.

Using the moon sand recipe below, you can make it in batch and store it. So the next time you do not have to repeat the process.

Now, let us go through different moon sand recipes using household items.

Moon Sand Recipes

1. Moon sand recipe with baby oil

This recipe is similar to the one like the one above on making moon sand with vegetable oil. Instead of using vegetable oil you can use baby oil.

This is my favourite moon sand recipe because the baby oil is not too greasy and makes it fun for children to mix it using their hands.

Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baby oil
  • Mixing bowl
  • Food coloring ( optional)
  • Essential oil ( optional)

Method:

  1. Put 4 cups of flour in a bowl
  2. Put 1/2 cup of baby oil
  3. Add food coloring & essential into the baby oil cup
  4. Mix step 3 until the oil is mixed with the food coloring and essential oil
  5. Pour the mixture into the flour bowl
  6. Mix together until you get the right moon dough texture

Note : For every 4 cup of flour add 1/2 cup of baby oil.

Firstly, it depends how much of moon sand you would like to make. I would say start with 4 cups of floor.

Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil
  • Mixing bowl
  • Food coloring ( optional)
  • Essential oil ( optional)

Method:

  1. Put 4 cups of flour in a bowl
  2. Put 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  3. Add food coloring & essential into the vegetable oil cup
  4. Mix step 3 until the oil is mixed with the food coloring and essential oil
  5. Pour the mixture into the flour bowl
  6. Mix together until you get the right moon dough texture

For every 4 cup of flour add 1/2 cup of vegetable oil.

I always like to make in smaller batches. Making moon sand with toddlers involved is actually quite fun.

Besides enjoy to play with moon sand, they have fun stiring and mixing the oil and flour together.

Keep mixing the flour and oil until you get a moist texture.

It should feel crumbly but can still be squeezed by hand.

Don’t be afraid to add more flour or oil to get the texture that you desire. But always add in small amounts.

Add food coloring if you would like to make a colorful moon sand. This is good to teach toddlers colors.

You can also add

3. Moon sand recipe with conditioner & corn-starch/flour

The basic ingredient of moon sand recipe remains to be flour. However, instead of using vegetable oil, you can use conditioner.

However, using this recipe you can replace the flour with corn-starch/flour

Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Conditioner
  • Mixing bowl
  • Food coloring ( optional)
  • Essential oil ( optional)

Method :

  1. Add about 4 cups of flour/corn flour
  2. Add 2 cups of conditioner
  3. Add food coloring (optional)
  4. Stir it well with your hands
  5. Add essential oil (optional)

This moon sand recipe is also just as easy to make. However, the texture of corn flour can be a little thick. Sometimes it can come out to be more like dough than a crumbly sand.

Hence, using the flour is a much easier way to make moon sand.

How long does this recipe last?

The best thing about moon sand made of flour is that it will last forever.

Moon sand does not dry off.

If you get water on it then dry it on a newspaper.

Storing:

I keep my moon sands in a tight sealed Tupperware.

Whenever it is a rainy day or I am looking for something to do with my toddler, I take out the moon sand and when were are done I store it again for play the next time.

Moon sand play ideas for kids

Play is important element in a healthy mental development for children.

The best thing about moon sand is that it is a sensory activity that children love.

Sometimes parents have to make different batches for each child to give them their own space and time to explore things to do with the moon sand.

It is a messy play that is also easy to clean. If you are playing this indoors, place a plastic mat underneath the tray so you can scoop it easily.

Otherwise a quick clean using the vacuum cleaner will brush all the flour.

Here are some fun moon sand play ideas with your kids:

  • Build a sand castle. Collect some cups and ask your child to fill them in with moon sand and build their castle.
  • Trace the alphabets or number with their fingers in the moon dough
  • Use cookie shapes and ask them to identify or create different shapes on the tray.
  • Ask your child to be part of the preparation. Get them to feel different textures, like flour, oil or conditioner. Then ask them to choose the color they like for the moon sand. While doing this teach them about different colors.
  • For younger children, moon sand can be a great way to teach them about pouring and scooping. Place a few spoons of different sizes and ask them to scoop it.
  • Pretend play: Get some cupcakes mould and ask them to fill it in with the moon dough. Ask them to pretend it is someone’s birthday. Put an unlit candle in the middle of the cupcake and get them to sing the happy birthday song.
